bmobile supports THA’s Finance Week 2017

Port of Spain, Trinidad, November 30, 2017

“Be Innovative, be Creative. Be Bold, be Curious.”

These are some of the words the Tobago House of Assembly’s Division of Finance and The Economy hopes would resonate in the minds of all who took part in its Finance Week 2017.

The various events which formed part of this important annual developmental initiative included an Economic and Business Outlook Conference; a Financial Literacy Empowerment Forum; and a Youth Empowerment Forum.

bmobile once again partnered with the Division in the hosting of this year’s week of events. As part of its sponsorship, bmobile was the official communications provider, supplying internet service to enable live streaming of the activities. The Company’s participation also extended to other key areas of Finance Week. At the Business Outlook Conference on November 14th, TSTT’s Chief Information Officer Paul Mayne was one of the featured Speakers, alongside two representatives from VMware Inc., a global leader in cloud infrastructure and digital workspace technology and one of bmobile’s key strategic partners.

bmobile’s presence was also felt at the Youth Empowerment Forum held on November 17th. At the Forum, which is now in its 6th instalment, attendees were able to interact with the Company’s representatives at its booth, which also featured exciting giveaways throughout the day, including attractive Huawei packages and the coveted Samsung Galaxy S8.

Commenting on the Company’s involvement in the youth-focused event, Manager Enterprise Marketing and Communications, TSTT Tobago Operations, Onica Blackman said, “bmobile has always been deeply committed to the development of our youth, and we fully support ventures such as these aimed at positively shaping young minds, and exposing them to opportunities in the ICT field, and encouraging innovation. We are pleased to partner yet again with the THA for this Forum, and overall for Finance Week 2017.”

Secretary of Finance and the Economy, Assemblyman Joel Jack was among the distinguished Speakers who addressed participants at the Forum. He noted that the Division carefully selected topics that would motivate young people and also encourage them to explore careers in creative fields. Mr. Jack urged the youth to take full advantage of the opportunities available to them in Tobago.

Manager Strategic Business Development at the Division of Finance Tricia Beckles elaborated on the specific focus of this year’s Forum. “The main thing we want to emphasize is innovativeness, using your creativity to go forward,” Beckles said. She added that the Youth Forum is also used as an avenue to hear about the challenges that the country’s youth are facing, as well as to provide an opportunity for several young, accomplished individuals to offer advice to their counterparts.

The Youth Empowerment Forum is also closely linked to the objectives of the recently-held inaugural Tobago ICT Summit, which was hosted by the Tobago Information Technology Limited (TITL) and supported by bmobile and several other entities.  Beckles shared that through the efforts of the many stakeholders involved, various technological infrastructures are being developed and put into place in Tobago.

Consultant at Ginamco Ltd., Sasha Layne, who delivered the Feature Address, encouraged participants to focus on local content development, and also advocated for business owners to collaborate with the relevant authorities to develop a local App aimed at marketing local businesses in Tobago.

The day’s proceedings also included dynamic and informative panel discussions. In one panel, TITL Operations Manager Sylvannas Berkeley spoke on the topic of training and education. He noted that there should be greater commitment for ICT training for young people and mature workers. In another discussion, Veterinary Scientist Dr. Nyoni Winchester educated participants on the various technological advancements in agriculture through the use of ICT, one of which is a Bluetooth Beacon which is used to keep track of livestock.

Finance Week 2017 culminated on Wednesday 22nd November, with a Breakfast Meeting. One of the final aspects of the week-long activities was the “The Way Forward” discussion, where stakeholders discussed issues raised and challenges encountered during the events, with the overall aim of addressing them for next year’s Finance Week.
