the gift of technology to Tobago’s top SEA students

Port of Spain, Trinidad, December 15, 2017

The bmobile foundation hosted an awards presentation on Wednesday 6th December at the Company’s Tobago branch in Lowlands to celebrate and reward the Top 3 Performers in Tobago for the 2017 SEA Examinations.

These “SEA Stars” were presented with the git of technology in the form of a bmobile Technological Support Package worth over $25,000 by TSTT’s Executive Vice President, Strategic Alliance, Enterprise and Tobago Operations, Mr. Rakesh Goswami. The package includes a mobile phone as well as a free post-paid plan and free internet for the first five years of their secondary school enrollment.

The top performers who received the packages are Shenice Stanislaus, Chelsea Low, and Kareah Manning, who are all currently students at Bishop’s High School, Tobago. The scholars, coined the “Queens of Data” by Mr. Goswami in his remarks at the presentation, join the Top 10 performers in the 2017 SEA exams to join the rank of 39 students in total who have benefitted from the Technology Support Scholarship programme since its inception in 2015. The programme is part of bmobile’s ongoing commitment to enable technology to play a greater role in youth development and by extension national development.

“Each year at this remarkable event, we are profoundly inspired by the bright young minds we have met and the incredible potential they represent. We at bmobile are grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the success of these young persons for five years of their secondary school career, as they strive towards academic and personal excellence,” said Mr. Goswami.

Addressing the young recipients directly, Mr. Goswami also commended them for their achievements thus far. “Allow me to extend our congratulations to you and your parents and guardians who would have also been a big source of support for you,” he stated. “You have a brilliant future ahead of you and it is our wish that our services help you to be always prepared to take advantage of every good opportunity that comes your way.”

Mr. Goswami also encouraged the scholars to take advantage of the opportunity presented by the scholarship to utilize technology as a tool for continued academic advancement. “Remember however, that to whom much is given, much is expected, so my advice to you is remain humble and let your accomplishments do the talking. We are expecting great things from you.”

Echoing Mr. Goswami’s sentiments and also on hand to congratulate and cheer on the top performing students was Frances Simmons, Head of TSTT’s Tobago Operations.

Shenice Stanislaus, the top SEA performer in Tobago, was all smiles as she sat between her proud parents, Frank and Alene Stanislaus, during the light-hearted function. When asked about how she felt upon receipt of her technology scholarship, Shenice said, “It feels great! I think that it will help me a lot. I feel really, really happy. I was not expecting this at all!”

Her father Frank echoed her surprise saying, “We had some other presentations before…but when bmobile called, we were most surprised – it’s such a substantial contribution. It’s very much appreciated.”

Chelsea Low, one of the recipients of the scholarship, already has plans for how she will use her gift of technology. “I’ll be using this package to do research, my projects and even to help study using apps with languages. There are a lot of projects that require certain things from the internet. It’s really admirable and very generous of them [bmobile] to do such a thing: to enable us the ability to research and be connected.”

Chelsea’s mother, Rachel Low, added that the connectivity provided by bmobile with the scholarship has benefits that extend beyond her daughter’s school life. “Having a phone is such a vital thing nowadays and now, having mobile data where not everyone can be able to afford it, means that you can always contact someone if you need help. It’s not just about school, it’s about life.”

She also commented on the motivational value of the Technological Support Package for students sitting the SEA Examinations in the future. “What bmobile is doing is a fantastic idea, and it will also encourage children to work harder towards the goal of winning this package. It’s another great ambition for SEA students to work towards.”
