Hillview sweeps bmobile Secondary Schools Swim Meet

Port-of-Spain, Trinidad – February 3, 2019

Hillview College Spartans extended their dominance of the bmobile National Secondary Schools Swim Meet by once again capturing the Boys Combined Team division for the fourth consecutive year at the National Aquatic Center in Couva.

This year’s competition was hosted by Tidal Wave Aquatics and overseen by the Amateur Swimming Association of Trinidad and Tobago (ASATT). Now in their 16th year of sponsorship of the meet, bmobile continues to play a major role in the development of Trinidad and Tobago’s young sportsmen and women.

TSTT’s Manager Corporate Responsibility and Community Relations, Anjanie Ramesar-Soom, was on-hand at the event and she reinforced that “Sport is integral to the growth of our young people. At the bmobile Foundation, sport is one of our core pillars alongside culture, education and health. Our investment in developmental swimming over the past 16 years shows our commitment to the moulding of young minds and upright citizens. We are deeply intent on continuing our support for the sport and this nation’s upcoming athletes.”

Altogether, Hillview’s superior squad of swimmers tallied a golden total of 307 points. Fatima College (252.5 points) climbed one spot higher this time around as they finished second overall followed by St. Mary’s College (153 points).

The Spartans’ 11-year old marine ace, Giovanni Rivas (12 & Under), made light work of his opposition as he swam to victory in the 50m freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly events. For his competitive consistency in the pool, Rivas also copped bmobile’s exclusive Male Top Performer accolade. Gabriel Bynoe, Jae-Hwa Lee Wing, Nathan Nancoo, Jonathan Abraham, Jalen O’Brien, Loic Seepaul, Adrian Downes, Josiah Hackett, Javed Ghany and Rodney Phillip also racked up precious points to ensure the boys in gold and maroon swept this division.

In the Girls equivalent, Bishop Anstey High Port-of-Spain (222.5 points) put an end to Holy Name Convent’s (218 points) four-year stranglehold of this category. Rounding off the top three was Bishop Anstey East with 177.5 points. Miracle Ministries’ Joy Blackett (12 & Under) went on to bag bmobile’s Female Top Performer for her golden performances in the 50m backstroke, butterfly; backed by a silver in the breaststroke and freestyle bronze.

Spartans coach, Sterling Manchouk, applauded his team’s valiant effort and credited their long hours of training to the unit’s success.

“They are a very dedicated bunch and gave their all today,” he stated. “Winning this title for the fourth consecutive year proves that we’re doing something right, but it also shows the dedication and commitment of coaches, students and parents. Congratulations to Giovanni for his mesmerising work today and to the entire team. We look forward to events like these to showcase our talents as we continue to grow.”

Meet co-ordinator, Hazel Haynes, was pleased to announce an injury-free and event-filled day. Haynes expressed pleasure with the timely response from schools which ensured a strong turnout of athletes. She also held in high regard the long-term investment from main-sponsors, bmobile.

“The athletes showed great interest and enthusiasm to participate. Events such as these auger well for the production of this nation’s future national representatives. bmobile’s presence here is extremely important, their longevity of investment has and continues to go a long way. We are very privileged to be chosen by bmobile, very grateful and encouraged,” said Haynes.
