Meet the finalists – Champions of Business – Business Tech Award
In today’s digitally connected world, companies can no longer afford to take success for granted. Firms are now required to keep “moving” – re-inventing themselves and their products, delivering goods and services that are personally relevant to consumers, and meaningfully different from the competition. Companies that want to remain competitive must therefore strive to innovate, grow, and disrupt their own businesses.
With this in mind, the Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Industry and Commerce has partnered with technology leader bmobile, to introduce a new award category for the 2018 edition of our annual Champions of Business event. With technology transforming both the global marketplace and society as a whole, the T&T Chamber decided, with the support of bmobile, to introduce the Business Technology award, which recognises companies or individuals that are using technology to carve a path to success. Through this initiative, we are challenging businesses to take a more strategic look at how they deploy technology in their operations. The recipient of this prestigious award will win a customised business solution, courtesy of bmobile, to the value of TT $10,000.00.
We’ve already decided on the three finalists, and the winner will be announced on the night of the Awards. In order to meet the stringent selection criteria, finalists had to show that their businesses were relatively new to the market, that they were innovative, disruptive, and displayed marketing strength, and that their solution or service was accessible.
Key Stone Designs Limited, our first finalist, is an e-commerce platform that brings together vendors and customers at shuphub.com, and delivers purchases via UPS. Shuphub wants to revolutionise the way customers shop within Trinidad and Tobago and the wider CARICOM market, thereby offering vendors an opportunity to expand their target markets. Entrepreneurs no longer need brick and mortar stores when they can set up online stores for as low as TT $995. By January 2019, Shuphub’s service will be available in every CARICOM territory. The company also believes in giving back to the national community, so it works with schools to educate youth on Information and Communications Technology, and helps young entrepreneurs set up their businesses.
Sun Tixx Caribbean Limited, meanwhile, provides a technology-driven event ticketing service that manages the generation, distribution and sale of tickets for all sizes and types of events. An online Trinidad and Tobago event hub, it provides instant access to tickets via different sales channels. Services are delivered through proprietary software that resides on Sun Tixx-managed servers, and was largely developed in-house by a locally schooled T&T national. The service is accessible worldwide and is already being used in Guyana, St. Lucia and Colombia. Not forgetting its corporate responsibility, the company has supported various charitable events, such as the T20 Cricket, by reducing its ticketing commission prices to raise funds for victims of Hurricanes Irma and Maria, which devastated several Caribbean territories in 2017.
Finally, WiPay (Trinidad and Tobago) Limited provides online payment solutions to both individuals and corporate clients. The company designed a CourtPay system for the Judiciary of Trinidad and Tobago, and introduced its Top-Up Service back in 2016 as a form of digital cash that offers an unprecedented level of financial inclusion for people who underutilise the traditional banking system. It allows anyone without a bank account or credit card to make digital financial transactions. CourtPay, for instance, encourages people to make court-ordered maintenance payments with WiPay’s Top-Up vouchers. The service also offers great benefits for small- and medium-sized enterprises, via a free platform that can be integrated into any merchant’s website to facilitate credit card payments – it’s a really easy way of boosting regional e-commerce!
Apart from the Business Technology award, the Champions of Business will present other awards that speak to exporting, entrepreneurship and lifetime achievement in the business arena. Individuals and companies will be recognised in several other categories, including Internationally Known…T&T Owned Company of the Year (sponsored by First Citizens), and Entrepreneur of the Year (sponsored by EY). The evening will culminate with the induction of two iconic businessmen to the T&T Chamber’s Business Hall of Fame.
Now in its 14th year, the Champions of Business Awards and Cocktail Reception will take place on Thursday, November 1, 2018, at the National Academy for the Performing Arts in Port of Spain. As we draw closer to the big event, the T&T Chamber will continue to unveil the nominees and finalists in the various award categories.
